How Does Namma Metro Compare to Other Indian Metros?

Bengaluru’s Namma Metro is now significantly more expensive compared to other metro systems across India:

  • Ahmedabad Metro: ₹5 to ₹25 for a 40-km journey.
  • Pune Metro: Maximum fare capped at ₹40.
  • Kolkata Metro: ₹5 to ₹25 for various distances.
  • Delhi Metro: Maximum fare of ₹60.

Why Has Bengaluru Metro Increased Fares?

Bangalore Metro Rail Corporation Limited (BMRCL) has justified the fare hike as a necessary step to improve operational efficiency and fund network expansion.

Since the last fare revision in 2017, Namma Metro has expanded from 43.2 km to 76.95 km, with a goal of reaching 175.55 km by December 2026.

Rising Costs and Financial Burden on Commuters

BMRCL cites increasing maintenance costs, which have surged by 300% due to frequent repairs and expensive spare parts. The hike is also intended to cover operating expenses and future infrastructure development.

However, commuters argue that the increase makes public transportation unaffordable, especially for students and low-income workers.

Impact on Students and Daily Commuters

Students form nearly 30% of daily metro passengers, and the fare hike has placed a heavy financial burden on them. The All India Democratic Students’ Organisation (AIDSO) has strongly opposed the hike and demanded a 50% concession for students.

According to AIDSO, the metro, which was originally introduced to reduce traffic congestion and promote public transport, is now becoming an economic strain on the common people.

With the fare increase, many fear a shift towards private vehicles, leading to increased road congestion and pollution in Bengaluru.
